I TOOK CARE OF A GENTLEMAN w/ ALZHEIMERS: "Women's Brains Appear More Vulnerable To Alzheimer's Than Men's "

Back in my college days (late 80's) I was employed as a home health care aide for Charles Evenson,a retired gentleman who owned Michigan Wheel (manufacturers of boat propellors). He had severe Alzheimers, and couldn't remember what he did 10 minutes prior. He could walk with a walker, and could do basic daily activities, but needed somebody close by at all times to assist him a little. He was married & his wife needed an aide as well because she had recently broker her hip. Because they were wealthy & members of various country clubs around Grand Rapids,we would take them to lunch & dinner almost every day at one of the clubs,so we enjoyed nice meals as a perk of the job. In general, the job was pleasant, not difficult, and I felt like I became a friend of the elderly couple over time. But its a difficult disease for family members. If they weren't wealthy,it would be a lot of work for a family or putting them in a special care facility. They could afford to employ home health care workers & continue living in their golf course condomiium, but most people cannot. -vk-
